چکیده

Object identification via a perceptual-demonstrative mode of presentation has been studied in cognitive science as a particularly direct and context-dependent means of identifying objects. Several recent works in cognitive science have attempted to clarify the relation between attention, demonstrative identification and context exploration. Assuming a distinction between ‘(language-based) demonstrative reference’ and ‘perceptualdemonstrative identification’, this article aims at specifying the role of attention in the latter and in the linking of conceptual and non conceptual contents while exploring a spatial context. First, the analysis presents an argument to the effect that selection by overt and covert attention is needed for perceptualdemonstrative identification since overt/covert selective attention is required for the situated cognitive access to the target object. Second, it describes a hypothesis that makes explicit some of the roles of attention: the hypothesis of identification by epistemic attention via the control of perceptual routines.

The Interplay between Joint Attention, Physical Proximity, and Pointing Gesture in Demonstrative Choice

A fundamental property of language is that it allows us to establish triadic joint attention to a referent, for instance by the use of spatial demonstratives. Traditional accounts of demonstrative choice focused on the physical proximity of the referent to the interlocutors. However, recent work taking into account the multimodal context in which spatial demonstrative use is generally embedded ...

12 Perceptual Attention and the Space of Reasons

It is sometimes said that the source of direct perceptual knowledge of the world around us is peculiarly transparent. In Michael Ayers's words, such knowledge is " perspicuous in that one who has it knows how he knows what he knows " (1991, p. 183). What is the content of this immediate understanding we seem to have of the source of perceptual knowledge? And what is the role of perceptual exper...

Context-Dependent Data Envelopment Analysis-Measuring Attractiveness and Progress with Interval Data

Data envelopment analysis (DEA) is a method for recognizing the efficient frontier of decision making units (DMUs).This paper presents a Context-dependent DEA which uses the interval inputs and outputs. Context-dependent approach with interval inputs and outputs can consider a set of DMUs against the special context. Each context shows an efficient frontier including DMUs in particular l...

Reference, perception, and attention

I examine John Campbell’s claim that the determination of the reference of a perceptual demonstrative requires conscious visual object-based selective attention. I argue that although Campbell’s claim to the effect that, first, a complex binding parameter is needed to establish the referent of a perceptual demonstrative, and, second, that this referent is determined independently of, and before...
